Our Story
Kynd was officially founded in 2014. But in reality, our story has been in the works for a whole lot longer than that.
Our founder, Mark Pitchford, had been growing cannabis in California, Alaska, and Nevada for over 30 years, starting back in the Wild West days before strains even had names. Over time, Mark’s dedication to his craft led him to dial in heavy-hitting cultivars like MTF, which he perfected while heli-skiing in the Chugach Mountains of Alaska. His frosty, flavorful, potent flower was enjoyed from Lake Tahoe to the Vegas desert.
Back then, the best of the best was called “kind bud.” So when the landscape shifted and we began building a company, we decided to call it kynd.
We entered our Reno grow in November 2014 and immediately started retrofitting the space from the ground up. Our obsession with maximizing flower quality meant we never took shortcuts, implementing advanced cultivation techniques to grow cleaner, purer, and more consistent buds with vibrant terpene profiles. We also took special care post-harvest, ensuring the flower was cured and stored at precisely the right temperature and humidity, and handled properly on its way to stores.
Knowing that a clean facility was key to consistent, high-quality flower, we invested more time in cleaning than anyone else we knew. Our commitment to cleanliness wasn’t just about meeting industry standards — it was about exceeding them, which is why we avoided the use of pesticides and harsh chemicals.

And the results of all that hard work and dedication? Well… they were kynd of incredible. Everyone knew the best weed came from up north, and people from all walks of life loved the quality, consistency, and diversity of our products. The hype spread to Vegas. Soon, kynd flower was a Nevada favorite.

But from the start, we weren’t just cultivating flower: we were tending to the community around us. Cleaning up trash along the Truckee River. Donating to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Sponsoring the Rocker Memorial Skate Park. Supporting local artists, athletes, veterans and medical patients. It only seemed natural: if we truly wanted to spread kyndness, why stop at our own four walls?
After six years in Nevada, we expanded east to Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Everywhere we went, we brought our commitment to quality and caring with us. We worked hard to bring our new facilities up to our lofty standards, establishing a consistent climate and environment so we could bring our boutique growing process to scale. We kept using the same meticulous post-harvest and packaging techniques. And we got involved in our new communities, volunteering and donating to local organizations chosen by members of the kynd family who knew their homes best.
In 2023, we redesigned the kynd brand to better represent our values: empathy, inclusivity, and positive change. In December, we launched the Season of Kyndness campaign to bring our message everywhere kynd is grown. Now and forever, kynd truly is for all humankynd.

We continue to make all kynds of products for all kynds of people, from flower and tinctures to vapes, edibles, prerolls, and beyond. Every time you purchase kynd, we donate a portion of the proceeds to great local organizations.
No matter how much we expand, our core DNA remains the same as when we came down out of the mountains and set up shop in Reno. Not just figuratively, either: we’re still using some of the same great strains we started with back in the day, like MTF, Blackwater, and Mai Tai. And many of our original team members are still along for the ride.
Here’s to 10 years of kyndness — and many more to come.
